Volunteer Guardian Program
Judge Elinore Marsh Stormer has created the Volunteer Guardian Program to provide trained, Court appointed volunteer guardians for indigent wards who do not have family or friends who can help. The program coordinator with Summit County Public Health will match a volunteer with a person in need. Summit County Probate Court, in conjunction with the Volunteer Guardian Program, will train all volunteers to serve as advocates and surrogate decision makers for the wards under guardianship.

Mandatory Guardianship Training Video for Appointed Guardians
To prepare for guardianship, all appointees are required to watch two training videos prior to the appointment hearing. To facilitate this requirement, the videos will be scheduled on the same day as your hearing. Information on the date and time for the video presentation and appointment hearing will be sent by Probate Court.
Attention Guardianship/Conservatorship Applicants!
Upon applying for guardianship you are required to submit a BCI background check. Background checks should be completed at the time of application for Guardianship. Processing a background check can take anywhere from 3 to 30 days. You must have a valid government-issued photo ID (Driver’s License, State ID, Military ID, Green Card). Background checks are available through the Summit County Clerk of Courts, or you may go to the Ohio Attorney General’s Bureau of Criminal Investigation  to locate a BCI background check site near you.
