Probate New Day Court

For those living with long-term mental illness and their families, the supports and services can be difficult to navigate. Summit County Probate Court’s New Day Court, the first of its kind in the state of Ohio, gives participants the tools to take an active role in their recovery and avoid repeat hospitalizations. This is accomplished by offering compassionate case management with all providers involved in the participant’s treatment. A new video has been released on the Probate Court’s website to help inform individuals and families about how New Day Court impacts treatment.  For more information and a video click New Day Court.

“Many times people with mental illness are reluctant to obtain treatment,” said Probate Court Judge Elinore Marsh Stormer. “New Day Court is designed to provide support for people while they adjust to the medication and encourage them to talk frankly with their doctors and their family members about what they are experiencing. It allows people to remain in the community while they get treatment and begin their recovery process.”

New Day Court is designed to help smooth the transition for those hospitalized under civil commitment to maintaining the best possible outcome for each participant. Judge Elinore Marsh Stormer along with community partners; the Alcohol, Drug Addiction and Mental Health Services Board (ADM), Community Support Services, The National Alliance on Mental Illness of Summit County (NAMI), created New Day Court in January of 2016.
